Rhodes Town suits travellers who want history on the doorstep. The capital sits at the north tip of the island and splits into the walled medieval Old Town and the larger New Town, where most hotels and bars stand. A base here puts the Palace of the Grand Masters, the Street of the Knights and the Mandraki harbour within a walk. It also makes the easiest starting point for ferries and for exploring the island by car. Read the [sights guide](https://fly2greece.net/rhodes-sights.html) for what lies inside the walls.

Ixia, Ialysos and Trianda form the large-hotel strip on the west coast, between Rhodes Town and the airport. Ixia is a purely tourist resort with big deluxe hotels along the shore. Ialysos is one of the largest towns on Rhodes, a few minutes from the capital and close to the airport. The coast here faces west, so it catches the afternoon breeze that suits windsurfers. This area works well for a comfortable, self-contained beach holiday near the capital.

Faliraki is the largest organised beach resort on Rhodes, on a wide sandy bay on the east coast. Hotels of every size stand behind the beach, from big resort blocks to smaller studios and apartments. The resort is known for its watersports by day and its nightlife after dark. Faliraki suits travellers who want a busy base with a long beach and plenty to do. The beach itself is described in the [beaches guide](https://fly2greece.net/rhodes-beaches.html).

Lindos suits travellers who want a village base below one of the island's great sights. The white village sits under its acropolis 55 km south of Rhodes Town, with two sheltered beaches on either side. Rooms and studios climb the slopes above the bay, many with sea views, while larger hotels stand a short way out along the coast at Lardos and Pefkos. It is a scenic, walkable base, though the village lanes are steep and car-free.

## The quiet south-east

The south-east coast is the quiet corner of Rhodes. Around Gennadi, Kiotari and Lardos the big blocks give way to smaller hotels and to villas, set beside long, largely unspoiled beaches. Kiotari, also called Gennadi Bay, has newer and larger hotels, while Gennadi village keeps an authentic feel. This coast suits travellers after calm and space rather than nightlife, and it is villa country, covered in the [villas guide](https://fly2greece.net/rhodes-villas.html).
