Tavernas and cafes fill the lanes that run off Sokratous Street, the main shopping street that climbs toward the pink Suleymaniye mosque. Tables spill into small squares between the stone houses, and the choice runs from grilled fish to Greek classics. Tavernas thread through the white lanes under the acropolis, and several open rooftop terraces with views over the bay and the fortified hill. The village is car-free, so dinner comes after a walk up from the beach. Down on the beach at Gennadi stand seafood tavernas that serve fish, grilled meat, salads and Greek dips at fair prices. Inland, the village of Apolakkia has several restaurants around its central square, where the through road passes. It is the wine capital of Rhodes, set at 850 m on the slopes of Mount Attavyros and ringed by vineyards.
