## The beaches of Serifos

Serifos beaches fall into two groups: a row of beaches along the east coast within reach of the port of Livadi, and quieter sandy coves on the south-west side of the island. The east coast holds the busiest and most accessible sands, including the town beach of Livadi and the celebrated Psili Amos. The south-west, around Ambeli and Megalo Livadi, keeps its beaches remote, reached by car and a final stretch on foot. Serifos also has room for naturists at its official nudist beach, Karavi, and at a few quiet beaches out of high season.

## East-coast beaches near Livadi

**Psili Amos** - meaning "fine sand" - is considered one of the finest beaches on Serifos and one of the best in Greece, a fine-sand beach with shallow water suited to families with small children; it lies south of Agios Ioannis, the last part of the road a dirt track, and has tavernas and trees for shade. **Agios Ioannis Beach** sits on the east side north-east of Livadi and takes its name from the small church nearby; it is large, quieter than Psili Amos, shaded by trees and open to naturists out of high season. **Agios Sostis Beach**, just south of Psili Amos, is sandy with a smaller pebble cove below the Chapel of Agios Sostis, reached on foot for the last 5 minutes. **Lia Beach** is the most southern of this eastern row, about 5 kilometers from Livadi, sandy with some pebbles and reached by a 400-metre path from a parking area, which keeps it more secluded and leaves room for naturists on quiet days. Further north, **Platis Gialos** lies 12 kilometers north of Hora at the edge of a small village, a small sand-and-pebble beach reached over 2 kilometers of poor road and a dirt track, with a taverna, while **Kentarhos Beach** of sand and pebbles is reached from the picturesque village of Kentarhos.

## Livadi, Avlomonas & Livadakia

**Livadi** has the island's town beach, closest to all the facilities, a mixed sand-and-pebble beach with trees for shade and parasols and sunbeds for rent. **Avlomonas** lies next to it, north-east of Livadi, a 5-minute walk from the port, so it can get crowded; it too has sand and pebbles, a few parasols and sunbeds and trees for shade, and around here you find most of the accommodations, tavernas and amenities. **Livadakia** sits on the south-west side of the port of Livadi, a short walk from the harbour.

## Karavi & naturist beaches

**Karavi Beach is the official naturist beach of Serifos**, a small sandy cove 10 to 15 minutes' walk south of Livadakia, with some pebbles and flat, slightly slippery rocks in the clear water and little shade. Karavi means "ship", and the beach takes its name from a shipwreck at the entrance of the bay. More houses are being built around it, so how long it stays a nudist beach is uncertain. Beyond Karavi, the large, quiet beaches of Agios Ioannis and Lia also leave room for naturists out of high season.

## South-west beaches: Ambeli, Vagia & Megalo Livadi

**Ambeli Beach** lies in a bay in the south, reached by car for the first part from Livadi and on foot for the last; it is a quiet sandy beach with some pebble sections, gained by passing through the picturesque village of Ramos, which has its own sandy beach, then walking 45 minutes to an hour to Kato Ambeli. Other small beaches in the Kalo Ambeli bay are Koutalas, Malliadiko and Dyo Gialoudia. **Vagia Beach** is a wide sandy beach close to Koutalas, 9 kilometers south-west of Livadi, with tavernas that cannot always be relied on and a road whose last part is walked; in the same bay lie Ganema, a beautiful and usually quiet beach of sand and pretty pebbles with trees, and **Koutalas Beach** of sand and pebbles in front of its village, well shaded by trees. On the way from Koutalas to Megalo Livadi is another sandy, tree-lined beach, Malliadiko. **Megalo Livadi Beach** sits in the south-west in front of the village of the same name, a sandy beach with many trees, shallow and sheltered water and tavernas, safe for children and usually not busy.
