**Sifnos has a strong cooking tradition, and its tavernas cluster on the quay of Kamares, in the lanes of Apollonia and Artemonas, and by the beaches of Faros and Platis Gialos.** Hans has eaten and reviewed two of them - Da Claudio on the Kamares waterfront and Gorgona on Faros beach - and the guide below then sets out, area by area, where to look for a table. For the island's clay-pot dishes and its cook Nikolaos Tselementes, see the [Sifnos sights guide](https://fly2greece.net/sifnos-sights.html). Hire a car to explore Sifnos at your own pace, covered in our [Sifnos car hire guide](https://fly2greece.net/car-rental/sifnos.html).

Da Claudio is an Italian-run restaurant along the quay of Kamares, serving house wine, pizzas, pastas and salads. Monica, who took the order, was friendly and good-humoured, and with the bread came a spread of small appetisers - olives, a spicy cheese and breadsticks. Hans had a tuna pizza and his companion the pasta with mushrooms and truffles; the pasta was fine and the pizza good, though heavy on cheese in the Greek manner and light on tuna. At the end the table got a basket of grappa, a lemon liqueur and a berry liqueur. His verdict was 8 out of 10.

Gorgona sits on the beach of Faros, in the south of Sifnos. The menu runs to chicken, meat, fish, spaghetti, salads and starters. Hans ordered a salad and two chicken souvlaki; despite the quiet it took a long time to arrive, but the chicken was tender and the fries crisp, and the Greek music was good. The service felt unwelcoming and, unusually for Greece, no small dessert or drink came with the bill. Hans still left a tip. His verdict was 7 out of 10 - good food, but unfriendly service.

## Where to eat by area

Beyond the two restaurants above, most villages have tavernas of their own. Use this as a guide to where to look; opening dates matter, since many places open only from June.

Kamares
The ferry port and the liveliest year-round choice - quayside tavernas, cafes and the pizzeria Da Claudio, a short walk from the potteries and the beach.

Apollonia
The capital, whose lanes hold the island's densest run of tavernas, ouzeries and cafes, busy into the evening.

Artemonas
Quieter tables among the gardens and mansions, a short walk from Apollonia.

Kastro
A handful of small tavernas and cafes in the car-free old capital, several with a view over the sea from the cliff edge.

Faros
Beach tavernas by the harbour, including Gorgona, open early in the season - a good bet in May.

Platis Gialos & Vathi
Beach tavernas on the south coast, most opening from June; Vathi has a taverna right on the sand.
