How complicated can you make it with names? The Cretans are a master in it. The village of Agios Spyridon or Agios Spyridonas is located in the east of the island along the old route to the Ziros Plateau in the Lasithi area. The village is not far removed from the excavation of Preasos. Until 1955 the village was called Kanene or Kanenes. The story is that a Byzantine general named Kanene was exiled to the village. This is where the village gets its name from. There are two old churches in the village, the Agios Spyridon church and Agios Georgios church (the cemetery).
In Agios Spyridon there is beautiful view over the green valley in front of the village. It makes a very clean impression. There are old stone houses and there are lots of flowers (especially roses and many bougainvillas) in the village. There are two kafenions in Agios Spyridon. There is also an informative billboard along the road.
