Tolo (Tolon): The Beach Village near Nafplio, Greece
Tolo, also written Tolon, is a sandy-beach resort village on the coast of the Argolis in the Peloponnese, 10 kilometers south of Nafplio and about 150 kilometers from Athens. Once a small fishing village, Tolo has grown into a lively little resort with plenty of accommodation, restaurants, bars and some nightlife, and it makes an easy base for the archaeological sites of the Argolis. The beach of Tolo
Tolo beach is fine sand with some pebbles on its western part, and the sea stays shallow, which makes it a perfect destination for families with small children. The widest and best stretch lies on the eastern side of the village. The beach offers water sports such as surfing, water skiing, pedal boating and diving, backed by tourist facilities, tavernas and bars. Nea Kios is another good beach a short way along the coast. From the harbour of Tolo, boats run day trips to the Saronic islands of Hydra, Spetses and Poros and to quieter, isolated beaches nearby.
History of Tolo
Homer already names Tolo among the towns that sent ships to the Trojan War, and like Nafplio it later passed under Frankish, Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman rule. The two islets off the coast carry monuments from the second Venetian period, including the Zoodochos Pigi church of 1688, when Tolo served as a harbour for the Venetian fleet; the Turks took the area again in 1718. Its fine beach and its closeness to Mycenae and Epidaurus turned Tolo into a popular resort, and Olympia, Sparta, Mystras, Delphi and Corinth are all within easy reach.
