A car is recommended on Andros. Andros is a large Cycladic island with beaches and walking trails spread across green valleys. Buses link the main towns, but they run to their own timetable and skip the quiet corners.

Where to pick up a car on Andros
You can collect a car in the main town and at the Gavrio port, and many agencies also deliver to your hotel. Book ahead for July and August, when fleets sell out and the walk-up desks run short. Andros has no airport, so most drivers collect the car on arrival by ferry.

Driving on Andros
Andros driving is on the right, like the rest of Greece, and the roads are narrow and winding rather than fast. The main road crosses from the ferry port at Gavrio to Batsi and the handsome capital of Chora, with turn-offs to the beaches. A smaller car is the easier choice for tight village streets and steep gradients.
