Donoussa Hotels & Villas: Where to Stay
Accommodation on Donoussa is limited and gathers at Stavros, the port and main village, in a handful of family-run rooms, studios and apartments within walking distance of the beach. Makares, Aposperitis and Iliovasilema sit by the Stavros harbour and its beach, while Prassinos, Firoa, Markouli and Pothiti offer self-catering studios a short walk back; there are no large hotels or villa estates, so in high season it is wise to book ahead.

Rooms by the Stavros harbour
Most of Donoussa's rooms sit right at Stavros, where the port, the main beach and the village run together. The Makares Apartments stand within 100 metres of Stavros beach, self-catering studios and apartments with air conditioning, a flat-screen TV, a kitchenette, a refrigerator and a sea view, with a free shuttle, a garden and free parking on request; a bakery, restaurants, bars and a mini-market are 100 metres away and Kedros beach 500 metres. Aposperitis offers double rooms and two-room flats by the main beach, each with air conditioning, a shower, a TV, a small refrigerator and a private balcony, above its own taverna of home-made meals. Iliovasilema keeps five studios and five rooms opposite the port, 30 metres from the sea, all with a WC, TV, bathroom, hot water and fridge, beside the owners' restaurant known for its clean, well-cooked food, its sea view and its sunset.
Self-catering studios
Donoussa has no villa estates, so self-catering means a set of studios a short walk from the water. Prassinos Studios is a new Cycladic-style complex next to a sandy beach and a traditional taverna, within walking distance of the main village, its studios and rooms with a kitchen, fridge and a balcony or veranda, and a port transfer included. Firoa Studios is a newly built chain of studios and apartments 150 metres from the sea and the village centre, each with an independent balcony, an open sea view, a fridge, a small cooker, a bathroom with 24-hour hot water and a TV, with room for extra beds and private parking. Markouli Studios at Stavros has double, triple and quadruple studios with a fully equipped kitchen, air conditioning, a fridge, a bathroom, a TV and shaded verandas over the Aegean, and Pothiti Studios and Althea Studios add further self-catering rooms with air conditioning, a kitchenette, free Wi-Fi and free parking.
Choosing a base
Where to stay on Donoussa comes down to Stavros, since almost all the rooms are there, wrapped around the port, the main beach and the village. Choose Makares, Aposperitis or Iliovasilema to be a few steps from the harbour and its beach, with a taverna downstairs; or one of the self-catering studios — Prassinos by its own sandy beach, Firoa, Markouli, Pothiti or Althea back towards the village — to cook for yourself and come and go by the ring road. All sit within walking distance of the sand, the ferry quay and the caiques to the quieter beaches. The beaches are set out in the Donoussa beaches guide.
