Mykonos Hotels & Villas

Stay in Mykonos Town if you want to walk to the nightlife and the harbour, at Platis Gialos or Ornos if you mainly want the beach, and in a private-pool villa along the coast if you want space and quiet. Mykonos Town holds the widest choice of studios and small hotels; the beach villages put you on the sand with a bus back to town; and the villas at Elia, Kalafatis and Agios Ioannis give you a pool and a sea view of your own. This guide covers the places on Mykonos that Hans has stayed in himself, plus the private-pool villas you can book on the island.

Mykonos Town

Mykonos Town (Chora) is the best base if you want to walk to the restaurants, shops and nightlife, and it holds the island’s widest choice of studios and small hotels. The town stays alive around the clock, so for a quiet night pick a place set back from the cars and the music — the ones below sit on quiet lanes and hillsides yet keep the harbour a short walk away. From the town bus stations the buses fan out to Platis Gialos, Paradise, Ornos and the other Mykonos beaches.

Villa Konstantin

Villa Konstantin stands on the northern hillside of Mykonos Town, 700 metres up and a 10-minute walk down into the centre, overlooking the sea, the sunset and the island of Delos. It is a small complex of self-catering studios and apartments around a large pool, more in the traditional style of old Mykonos than the modern hotels, with an openness you do not find down in the centre. Hans stayed here in May 2009: a studio with a full-size bathtub, a kitchen and a large veranda with a sea view, a wonderful pool with plenty of sun beds, and owners Sharon and Dimitri and receptionist Bernie who helped with maps, car rental and an early breakfast before the airport. It suits travellers who want to be away from the noise yet close to the action.

Hotel Nazos

Hotel Nazos is a family hotel of 14 rooms in Mykonos Town, small and friendly yet with the facilities you want. It sits close to the harbour and 100 metres from the main bus station at Fabrika square, on a quiet lane away from the discos. Every room has a bath or shower and toilet, a refrigerator, a minibar, a TV, air conditioning, internet access, a hairdryer and a private balcony with a panoramic view. The hotel adds a lounge, a snack bar, parking space and a 24-hour service, and it is more modernly decorated than most rooms in this price range.

Rania Apartments, Studios and Rooms

Rania Apartments occupy a garden in the Petasos area of Mykonos Chora, an A-class complex of 15 rooms, studios and apartments built in the traditional Cycladic style and open all year. Each apartment has a private bathroom, a refrigerator, a microwave oven, a telephone, a television, a veranda, air conditioning, a safe and a desk, and several add a living room, a kitchen and a sea-view balcony. It stands just behind Manto square in the harbour, up some stairs, on a quiet spot without traffic or disco noise yet close to the shops and the nightlife. The owners are Bonis and his son Anthony.

Studios Eleni

Studios Eleni is a small budget complex in central Mykonos Town, cheap and basic but quiet for the centre, with no disco noise. The rooms are small, each with a shower, toilet and air conditioning, set in two buildings on either side of a street that runs from the bus station towards the centre, with a cheap supermarket nearby.

Sahas Studios

Sahas Studios is a budget choice in the Tagoo area, 500 metres and 5 minutes on foot from Mykonos Town, in a quiet spot with a view of the sea. It has rooms for 2, 3 or 4 people, with or without a sea view, decorated in the Cycladic tradition, and a garden looking over the Aegean with a weekly barbecue party.

Aeolos Hotel

The Aeolos Hotel has 28 modern double rooms in Mykonos Town, with a comfortable breakfast room and lounges and a palm-tree garden holding a large swimming pool, a jacuzzi and a bar for cocktails at sunset. For a hotel with a pool in town it is not expensive.

Platis Gialos, Psarou & Ornos

Choose the beach villages if you come first for the sand rather than the nightlife. Platis Gialos is a large family beach 3.5 km from Mykonos Town, with water sports, a wide choice of restaurants and a bus every half hour; a coastal path leads from it past Paranga to Agia Anna, Paradise and Super Paradise, while Psarou and Ornos lie on the other side. See the full run of sand on the Mykonos beaches page.

Esperides Apartments, Platis Gialos

Esperides Apartments sit 150 metres from Platis Gialos beach, a complex of 18 studios and apartments each with a kitchenette and a large balcony or terrace. Platis Gialos is a family beach with water sports, several supermarkets and restaurants from cheap snack bars to Italian and Greek tavernas, and the bus runs to Mykonos Town every half hour until well after midnight in season. Esperides adds free transport to and from the port or airport, a good-value base for a beach holiday within easy reach of town.

The beach resorts

Stay at one of the famous beaches to step straight from your room onto the sand. Paradise is the party beach south of town; Kalafatis and Kalo Livadi lie quieter to the east; and Elia, the island’s biggest beach, gathers the luxury resorts. A car or the local bus links them to Mykonos Town — compare prices before you book a car on Mykonos, which costs more here than on most islands.

Hotel Paradise View, Paradise Beach

Hotel Paradise View stands 300 metres from Paradise Beach, overlooking the Aegean, with an outdoor swimming pool, free private parking and a complimentary buffet breakfast. Built in the traditional island style, it wraps a terrace around the pool with views of the beach and the landscape. Paradise Beach carries a large range of beach bars, shops, snack bars and tavernas and is one of the centres of the island’s nightlife; the airport is a 10-minute drive and the centre of Mykonos 15 minutes, on the local bus that stops in front of the hotel.

Villas & self-catering with a private pool

Book a villa when you want space, a kitchen and a pool of your own. The private-pool villas on Mykonos gather along the coast — at Kalafatis and Kalo Livadi in the east, at Elia among the luxury resorts, and at Agios Ioannis, Tourlos and Agios Stefanos within a short drive of town. Most are self-catering, most add a free two-way airport transfer, and the ones below are the named villas you can book on the island.

Kalafatis View, Kalafatis

Kalafatis View is a set of modern Cycladic-style villas, each with a private pool and panoramic Aegean views from the balconies and patios, 1.5 km from the beaches of Kalafatis and Agia Anna. Every air-conditioned villa has a living room with a fireplace and satellite TV, a fully equipped kitchen and a stone-built BBQ by the pool, with free Wi-Fi throughout. A mini market and local tavernas are 1 km away, Mykonos Port 11 km and the airport 13 km, with free private parking on site.

Villa Sunset, Agios Ioannis

Villa Sunset stands on a cliff at Aleomandra, a whitewashed villa with a private infinity pool and panoramic Aegean views, looking over the sunset and Delos from a large white-stone terrace with wooden sun loungers. It has a fully fitted kitchen with a dishwasher and microwave, a large dining area and a living room with satellite TV, plus a BBQ and two outdoor dining areas. Mykonos Town is 4 km away and Ornos Beach 1.5 km, with free private parking and a free two-way airport transfer.

Akon Villas by Saint John Hotel, Agios Ioannis

Akon Villas sit at Agios Ioannis, air-conditioned villas with private pools and panoramic Aegean views, each with a living room and a fully equipped kitchen. Guests can also use the swimming pools, bar and facilities of the sister Saint John Hotel a short walk away, and a 24-hour desk helps with car rental and reservations. The villas lie 4 km from the airport, 6 km from the new port and 4 km from Mykonos Town, with free Wi-Fi, free parking and a free two-way airport transfer.

Zinas Villas, Tourlos

Zinas Villas occupy the rocky coast at Kastro above Tourlos, luxury villas with private pools, an infinity pool and a hot tub facing the sunset. The owner, the Greek fashion designer Panos Zinas, crafted and furnished them with handmade pieces, and the grounds add a tennis court, pergola-shaded decks and a private helipad. The staff arrange anything from car rental to yacht hire.

Asteria Villas, Agios Stefanos

Asteria Villas stand at Houlakia overlooking the Aegean and Delos, traditionally built villas a 5-minute drive from Agios Stefanos Beach. Each has a fully equipped kitchen, a fireplace and a stone-paved sun terrace with full sea views, with a private pool or a hydromassage in every villa and a welcome basket on arrival. Mykonos Town is 4 km away and the airport 15 minutes by car, with free Wi-Fi and free private parking.

Elia Beach resorts

Elia is the island’s biggest beach and gathers its luxury resorts. Greco Philia Luxury Suites & Villas is a 5-star hotel on the cliffs above Elia with a full-service spa, a free-form pool and a gourmet restaurant, 5 minutes’ walk from the sand. Myconian Villa Collection sits on Elia Beach itself, seaside rooms and villas in minimal Cycladic style with a rejuvenation spa and an infinity pool; Psarou is 12 km away and Platis Gialos 10 km. Royal Myconian Resort overlooks its own private sandy beach at Elia, with rooms and suites — some with a private pool or hot tub — extensive spa facilities and three pool bars.

More self-catering villas

Three more self-catering options round out the coast. Sea Side Studios overlooks the bay of Kalo Livadi in elegant Cycladic style, 1 km from Ano Mera and 10 km from Mykonos Town, each unit with a kitchen, satellite TV and a sea-view balcony. Casa Del Mar Seaside Resort offers contemporary suites over a private cove on Glyfadi bay at Aleomandra, 4 km from town and sheltered from the Mykonian winds, with a free two-way airport and port transfer. Hotel De.Light at Agios Ioannis has air-conditioned suites facing Delos, an outdoor pool and a hot tub, and some suites add a private pool.
