Folegandros Hotels & Villas: Where to Stay

Accommodation on Folegandros concentrates in the cliff-top Chora and around the port of Karavostasis. The Chora puts you among the shops, tavernas and squares of the old town, while Karavostasis keeps you by the beach and the ferry. Rooms are limited and up-market, mostly studios and apartments rather than large hotels, so book early for July and August. This guide covers the places Hans visited, from Fata Morgana Studios in the Chora to the studios and apartments around the harbour. Hire a car to explore Folegandros at your own pace, covered in our Folegandros car hire guide.

Fata Morgana Studios, Chora

Fata Morgana Studios is where Hans stayed on Folegandros in 2011, and it holds probably the best views on the island. The studios sit by a car park at the entrance of the old Chora, a quiet spot with little traffic and a bus stop nearby, with the old town's churches, squares, restaurants, supermarkets and the Kastro on the doorstep. From the balcony you look out to the Chora and the Panagia church on one side and to the sea and the islands of Sifnos, Sikinos, Paros, Milos and Kimolos on the other. Each studio has a big bed, a couch, satellite TV, a small kitchen with a fridge, a breakfast bar and a balcony, and the staff clean it daily and were exceptionally friendly. A swimming pool with comfortable beds and free towels rounds out the stay, and a wide breakfast choice is served at the pool or on your balcony.

Coral Apartments, Karavostasis

Coral Apartments stands in a quiet corner of the picturesque harbour of Karavostasis, built in traditional Aegean style. The complex offers a mix of rooms, studios and suites, each with a shaded private balcony looking onto the sea or the garden and a seating area with a dining table. It provides free wireless internet and free on-site parking. The port beach spreads natural shade from tamarisk trees and has bars and tavernas by the sea, while the sandy Vardia beach lies a few stone steps away. Coral suits travellers who want a calm base right by the water and the ferry.

Vrahos Hotel, Karavostasis

Vrahos Hotel stands on a rocky slope at Karavostasis bay, 20 metres from the beach. The hotel has an open-air jacuzzi and a café-snack bar with a sea view, and its rooms and apartments come fully equipped, tastefully decorated, with air conditioning and a fridge. Maid service runs daily. On request the hotel collects guests from the port in its minibus, which helps when you arrive with luggage. It is a handy, comfortable base close to the ferry.

Vardia Bay Studios, Karavostasis

Vardia Bay Studios overlooks the sea and the village of Karavostasis, 2.8 km from the Chora and 20 metres from the beach. The complex holds 17 studios and 4 apartments on three levels of a small peninsula, so nearly every room keeps a sea view. A standard studio has one bedroom, a kitchen area, a bathroom with a hairdryer and a sea-view balcony, and sleeps 2 to 3 people. Facilities include free internet, free private parking, 24-hour room service, daily linen, air conditioning, a fridge and satellite TV, with a traditional breakfast served in your room or in one of two breakfast areas. It offers self-catering comfort at reasonable prices with breakfast.

Chora Resort Hotel & Spa

Chora Resort Hotel & Spa is a quiet resort in the Chora, the main town of Folegandros, with wide views over the Aegean. The hotel keeps a charming, scenic setting among the white houses on the cliff, with traditional Greek cafes nearby and, per the island listing, a helicopter service. From the Chora you can explore the island on foot to find beaches, private bays and traditional areas away from the crowds, and the port of Karavostasis is a short journey away for island-hopping. It suits travellers who want a calm, comfortable base in the heart of the town.

Villas & self-catering

Folegandros keeps its self-catering accommodation in studios and apartments rather than large villa estates, so a self-catering stay here means a studio or an apartment with a kitchenette. Fata Morgana Studios in the Chora, and Coral Apartments and Vardia Bay Studios at the port of Karavostasis, all offer self-catering rooms with kitchen facilities. Choose an area below to match a self-catering base to the kind of stay you want.

Self-catering in the Chora

The Chora suits a self-catering base that keeps the old town within reach. Studios here, such as those at Fata Morgana on the edge of the old town, put you a short walk from the shops, tavernas, squares and the Kastro. The town sits on a 200-metre cliff, so a base here means clifftop views rather than a beach on the doorstep. It is the choice for travellers who want the island's prettiest streets outside the door.

Self-catering at Karavostasis

Karavostasis suits a self-catering base by the beach and the ferry. Vardia Bay Studios and Coral Apartments offer studios and apartments with kitchen facilities a short walk from the sand, the harbour tavernas and the boat. This is the handiest stretch for a beach holiday and for early ferries, and the port beaches are described in the Folegandros beaches guide.

Choosing an area

Where to stay on Folegandros depends on the kind of holiday you want. The Chora suits a base in the town, within walking distance of shops, tavernas, squares and the Kastro, though it sits on a cliff away from the sand. Karavostasis puts you by the beach and the ferry, which helps for early crossings and island-hopping. Rooms are limited across the island, so book early for July and August whichever area you pick. The villages and their character are set out in the Folegandros island guide.
