Steps from the beach and 850 metres from the centre of Skala and the port, the seafront Porto Merika has a snack bar and an outdoor saltwater pool ringed by sunbeds. The airy studios and apartments have air conditioning, a kitchenette, fridge and TV, and some open onto a balcony; a breakfast of homemade marmalades and cakes is served daily, with free parking on site.

Romantza Studios stand in Netia, 900 metres from the port of Skala, with bright, air-conditioned studios that open to a private balcony with Aegean views, a kitchenette, mini fridge and en-suite bathroom. The Blue Bay Hotel is built in traditional island style just around the corner from the port town of Skala, a 3-minute stroll from all its shops, cafes, restaurants, the bus stop and the taxi stand. Taverns, shops and cafes are within 100 metres, and the ruins of an ancient acropolis are among the sights of Skala.

Mathio's Studios sit on a hill in the quiet Bay of Sapsila, a 2.5-kilometer walk from Skala on the way to Grikos, with five studios and two apartments run by the wonderfully hospitable Jakoumina. Ours was tastefully and personally decorated, with a large private balcony overlooking the bay - perfect for coffee in the morning or an ouzo in the evening - a well-equipped kitchen and a big bathroom. Best of all is Jakoumina's secret beach, reached through the garden: the nicest little beach we found on Patmos, where we never saw another soul. Mathios also rents a traditional stone house in the bay.

The Grikos Hotel is a traditional Patmos hotel 30 metres from the beach of Grikos bay, with a roof garden looking over the Aegean and free WiFi. Rooms are warmly decorated with air conditioning, a TV, a fridge and a balcony, and a Greek homemade breakfast buffet is served in the courtyard or roof garden. There is a library, the staff arrange car rental, boat trips and excursions, and a free two-way port transfer is offered on request.
