Alonissos Hotels: Where to Stay
Most visitors to Alonissos stay in and around Patitiri, the island's main port and largest village. The island also keeps rooms in the old capital Chora, 3 kilometres up the hill, and around the quiet beach bays of Votsi and Steni Vala to the north. Patitiri, the main resort
Patitiri is the main resort of Alonissos and the base for most stays. It is the largest village, with about 1,600 inhabitants, and it sits in the south-east of the island around the largest port. It is the first village you reach when you arrive by ferry. The name Patitiri means "wine press". The harbour is small and cosy, lined with trees and flowers, with quiet terraces, tavernas, shops, supermarkets and a bakery. Patitiri also has ATM machines and a Health Centre. Most of the island's accommodation sits around this harbour. A small pebble beach lies on the right side of the town, and Roussom Gialos beach is about 1 kilometre from the port. Excursion boats leave the harbour for the coastline, the Blue Cave, the Marine Park and the small islands offshore. The bays and coves are covered in the Alonissos beaches guide.
Palia Alonissos / Chora (Old Town)
Chora, the old capital, sits 3 kilometres up the hill above Patitiri and suits a quiet stay with views. It was the capital of the island until a 1965 earthquake destroyed most of the buildings, after which most people moved down to the sea at Patitiri. The houses have since been rebuilt and repaired, and Chora has become a place where foreigners buy a second home. It has some rooms to let, a couple of tavernas and a few shops. You reach it on foot in about 25 minutes from Patitiri, or by bus or taxi. From the village there are wide views over the island, which make it a good spot for sunsets. Votsi
Votsi is a small beach bay in the cove just past Roussom Gialos, north of Patitiri. The beach is pebbly and sits in a protected bay. Various accommodations are available around Roussom Gialos and Votsi, with all kinds of facilities close by. It makes a calm alternative to the harbour while staying within reach of Patitiri.
Steni Vala
Steni Vala ranks among the few settlements of any size on Alonissos, on the quieter coast north of Patitiri. The northern part of the island is hardly populated and stays quiet. Ancient buildings and pottery shards have been found at Steni Vala. It suits a remote, low-key stay away from the main port.
Ikion Hotel
The Ikion Eco Boutique Hotel is a family-run hotel in Patitiri, the port of Alonissos, where Hans stayed in May 2014. It is built in the lush green Cavos area, a few metres from the sea and the port, and is described as one of the most modern hotels on Alonissos. The hotel has 13 fully equipped rooms, of which 4 are suites or family rooms. All units are air-conditioned. Breakfast is served in the ground-floor lounge and garden, with local and fresh products, and free internet access covers all areas of the hotel. The owners, Gianna and Giannis, run it as a family environment. The hotel stands within walking distance of the port of Patitiri, with its taverns, shops and beach, yet stays very quiet. Roussom Gialos beach, the nearest beach for swimming, is a 5-minute walk away and has three tavernas serving fresh fish and seafood.
