Chorto is a small village in the south of the Pelion peninsula, located on the Pagasetic Gulf. It lies between the villages of Milina and Kalamos, at around 48 kilometer from the capital city of Volos. Milina is about 3 kilometer away from Chorto. Chorto is a popular destination for people that love windsurfing and sailing.
The village of Chorto has a small harbor with colorful fishing boats and there are several tavernas and small accommodations for tourists. In Chorto itself there is a village beach and around the village you can find some other quiet small pebble beaches. There are also several hiking trails to explore. Excavations have shown that Chorto was already inhabited in ancient times and that it was an important port for the people of South Pelion. In the Byzantine period the village was called Chortokastro. In the 19th century until about 1950 Chorto was an important trade center for agricultural products that were cultivated in the area. Since 1970 tourism started to play an increasingly important role for the village, but the it has has managed to preserve its Greek authenticity. Chorto overlooks the small island of Alatas on which stands the Agioi Saranta monastery, that dates from the Byzantine period.
