At the southernmost tip of the Kassandra peninsula in the area of Halkidiki on Cape Paliouri, at 112 kilometers ditance from the town of Thessaloniki, lies the village of Paliouri. Here you will find mainly traditional stone houses and narrow streets. The village of Paliouri itself is located on low hills at about 2.5 kilometers from the coast, but in the area there are beautiful beaches where a limited number of accommodations are available, including luxury villas with private pool. The distance to the village of Pefkochori is 7 kilometers. Also in the village Paliouri itself is a fairly large hotel complex. There are no high-rise buildings such as in Kallithea, which makes the place very picturesque. The most famous beach in this part of Kassandra is called Chrouso or Chrousso beach.
The name Paliouri comes from the word "Paliouria", a kind of bushes that grow in the region and which the people used to mark out their houses.
It is thought that near the village Paliouri, between Chrouso beach and the higher vantage Arapi, lie the remains of the ancient city Theramvos. This city was mentioned by Herodotus. According to hime the city was forced to help the Persianf in the war between the Persians and the Greeks.
Many excavations have been made in the area that seem to substantiate this story. The city survived until Roman times. On the southernmost point, 8 kilometers away from Paliouri, is the area known as Kanistro. Here was the site of the temple of Apollo Kanastreos which was built in the Ionian period. One of the original pillars of this temple is processed in the nearby chapel of Agios Nikolaos.
The beach of Agios Nikolaos is an approximately 1 kilometer long beach with sand and small pebbles, and usually it's pretty quiet. Near this beach with its fishing harbor are mostly private homes and there are no hotels. There are only a couple of luxury villas for rent at Tsagkari Pigadi. Sometimes the beach is also given that name (Tsagkari beach). The actual hamlet of Agios Nikolaos and the little harbour can be found at short distance westwards. Next to the harbour is another small beach.
Chrousso beach actually consists of three beaches: Chrouso, Xenia and Alonaki. At the beach of Chrousso are sunbeds and umbrellas for rent and you can enjoy water sports. Above it are Chryssi Ammos (golden sand) and beautiful Glarokavos beach (Glarokavos = "Bay of the seagulls'). At this last beach seawater flows through a narrow entrance in the shape of a channel into some kind of small lake, along which you can find the beach. The water is shallow and there is natural protection from the sun through the trees that surround the large beach of Glarokavos. Also on the side of the sea itself is beach. Near the beach is a beach bar where you can buy something to drink.
