The village of Platanias or Platania is located in the southeastern part of the Pelion peninsula, just about 60 kilometers from the capital city of Volos. The village is built on the ancient city of Afetes and it was named after the plane trees that grow in the area. There are now about 150 inhabitants in the village and it is a real tourist destination.
There are quite a few accommodations and a campsite in the area of Platanias. For tourists there is a wide choice of tavernas and there are souvenir shops, mini markets and a bakery. The beach is surrounded by olive groves and is well suited for children Platanias has a good and safe harbor at the time was used by the Persians who tried to conquer Greece from there. Now it is mainly a fishing port, but in the summer months there are also small boats which make trips to the Sporades islands of Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonnisos.
From Platanias you can follow a trail that runs along the seashore and leads to nearby Mikro beach. The walk to the beach takes about 20 minutes. During the summer months there is also a water taxi service that runs between the two places. A few kilometers north of Platanias is the beach of Kastri.
The village of Mikro is a small village which is situated in a beautiful bay. The large accompanying beach with its fine golden sand, gravel and tiny turquoise water is considered one of the most beautiful beaches of the Pelion area. The beach is therefore popular with both foreign and Greek visitors. Yet it is not a beach destination for mass tourism and you can still find the peace and quiet on Mikro beach that many people are looking for.
