The industrial town of Plomari, the second largest town on Lesbos after Mitilini, is situated on the southcoast of the island. Plomari is the ouzo capital of Greece. There are several ouzo factories and an ouzo museum on the road leading into Plomari town. The architecture of the town is very beautiful with big old mansions in different colours build against the hills, old factories, and olive presses. Most of the houses date from the 19th century
Through the town floats the Sedountas river, which is dried up in the summer. There are a number of Turkish fountains in the village as well as many houses that are build in a Turkish style. In Plomari there are some great restaurants and of course there are many cafeneons which serve ouzo and mezedes. The main area for eating is around the large Platanos across the bridge over the river. There are several churches of interest in the area including Agios Nikolaos, near the market, which has some interesting icons. The church of Agia Paraskevis is also lovely. Plomari has a hardbor full of fishing boats and private yaughts. Close to Plomari are the beaches of Agios Isidoros.
Thanks to the ouzo industry and the production of olive oil the island of Lesbos is economically self-sufficient and not really depending on tourism for the income of money. This is the main reason why Lesbos is still quite undeveloped for tourism. The island is quite large but most of the bus services are centred around the east of the island, so it makes good sense to rent a car when you are visiting Lesbos. Many people stay around Mytilini or Molivos and don't go anywhere else, but the more adventures people drive around the island and will find the more remote and quiet places, small empty beaches and tiny but interesting old churches.
Plomari has more the feeling of a working town than of a holiday destination. There are bars and restaurants and there are beaches, but everything is more concentrated around the every day life of the Greek inhabitants. On the edged of the town there are ouzo factories that are no longer working and they are set on (empty) pebble beaches where it is nice to go for a swim. After these beaches lies the larger beach of Agios Isidoros where most of the hotels are situated.
