Skyros Villas: The Best Areas for a Self-Catering Stay

Villas and self-catering apartments on Skyros concentrate in and around the Chora, on the beaches of Magazia and Molos, and in the quieter bays near Linaria. Skyros is a small, low-key island, so a villa here is usually an apartment, a studio group or a small house rather than a large estate. This guide sets out the areas to choose from by geography; for the named properties, see the Skyros hotels guide.

In and around the Chora

The area in and around the Chora suits a self-catering base that keeps the town within reach. The Chora itself is car-free, so a house here means a walk uphill with your bags, but you stay steps from the shops, tavernas and museums. Just outside the town, holiday homes and small villas sit on the slopes with views over the east coast; one example, Villa Mantalena, spreads across several buildings including a restored windmill about 3 km from Skyros Town. It is the choice for travellers who want the town on their doorstep.

Magazia & Molos

Magazia and Molos hold most of the island's self-catering rooms, on and behind the long sandy beach 4 km north of the Chora. Studios and apartments here put you a short walk from the sand, the beach bars and the only bus link to the capital. This is the busiest and most convenient stretch for a beach holiday, and the beach is described in the Skyros beaches guide.

Gyrismata

Gyrismata, just north of Magazia and Molos, is the area for a villa with a private pool close to the sand. It sits about 2 km from the Chora and 50 metres from a sandy beach, with a handful of new-build villas among the local plants. It suits a family or a couple who want their own pool and garden while staying near the island's main beach.

Aspous

Aspous is a quieter self-catering base in a sandy bay on the north-east coast, about 5 km from the Chora. Its apartments and houses are scattered on the green hills above the beach, with a few tavernas, a mini market and a petrol station but little other development. It suits travellers who want calm and a short drive to the town.

Acherounes & Linaria

Acherounes, a 10-minute walk from the port of Linaria, is a sheltered west-coast bay that suits families, with studios and apartments in front of a shallow, wind-protected beach 8 to 10 km from the Chora. Linaria itself, the ferry port, offers self-catering rooms handy for the harbour tavernas and the boat. Both make a calmer, west-coast alternative to the beaches near the capital.

Choosing an area

The right area for a villa on Skyros depends on your priorities. Choose the Chora for the town on your doorstep, Magazia or Molos to be on the main beach, Gyrismata for a private pool near the sand, and Aspous or Acherounes for a quiet bay. Wherever you stay, a car helps, because the best beaches lie far apart and many sit at the end of a dirt track, as explained in the Skyros car rental guide.
