Skyros Hotels & Villas: Where to Stay

Accommodation on Skyros concentrates in and around the Chora, at the beaches of Magazia and Molos, and at the port of Linaria. Hotels in the Chora keep you within walking distance of the shops and tavernas, Magazia and Molos put you on the sand, and Linaria, Aspous and Acherounes offer a quieter base. This guide covers the places Hans visited, from Hotel Nefeli in the Chora to the family apartments around the coast. Hire a car to explore Skyros at your own pace, covered in our Skyros car hire guide.

Hotel Nefeli, Chora

Hotel Nefeli is a recently renovated hotel at the entrance of Skyros Chora, where Hans stayed for five days in May 2018. It stands within walking distance of a large supermarket, shops and tavernas, with one of the island's best restaurants, Almathia, 25 metres away. The hotel is made up of three buildings, each in a different decorative style, with standard, executive, suite, studio, traditional and antique rooms. Facilities include a 220 m2 seawater swimming pool with a pool bar looking towards the castle and the monastery of Agios Georgios, a children's pool and play area, a garden and parking. Breakfast is served a la carte and draws mostly on local home-made products.

Perigiali hotel, Magazia

The Perigiali hotel is a complex of 28 units at Magazia, 1.5 km from the Chora and 70 metres from the beach and tavernas. The units are divided into rooms, studios and open-plan apartments, decorated in the traditional Skyrian style, and all look onto the pool with a view of the gardens, the beach or the fort above the Chora. Twin bedrooms measure 20 m2, studios run 25 to 35 m2, open-plan apartments are 32 m2 with a fully equipped kitchen for two to four people, and two-room apartments reach 48 m2 with two bathrooms and a master bedroom.

Mealos Apartments, Aspous

Mealos is a group of apartments in the sandy bay of Aspous on the north-east coast, on a 2,500 m2 private plot that ends at the beach. It has four single-room and two double-room apartments, all furnished in the traditional Greek style, each with its own kitchenette, air conditioning, a bathroom, a TV and a balcony with a view. Each studio takes up to three people, and the double-room apartments suit families of four. Aspous is a quieter base about 5 km from the Chora.

Pegasus Estate, Acherounes

Pegasus Estate is a set of studios and apartments in front of the sheltered beach of Acherounes, in a small bay in the south of the island 8 km from the Chora and a 10-minute walk from the port of Linaria. It has two stone-and-wood buildings, named Aethra and Aegli, with studios for couples, larger apartments for families of four to five, and a traditional Skyrian mezzanine level in one unit. Local buses run to Skyros Town six times a day, and two small tavernas nearby serve Greek food and fresh fish.

Lykomides Studios, Linaria

Lykomides is a family-run set of studios and apartments in the port of Linaria, one minute's walk from the beach, and it had the highest guest rating of any accommodation on Skyros in 2018. The owner, Soula Pappa, drove Hans around the island in her 4x4 to show places he would not have found alone. The rooms have air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, a TV, a fridge and a balcony over the Aegean, and the front desk can arrange car rental. Skyros Town lies within 12 km and the airport within 25 km.

Villas & self-catering

Skyros also has villas and self-catering apartments around the coast, usually a small house, studio group or apartment rather than a large estate. Villas Nefeli offers two new villas at Gyrismata, 2 km from the Chora and 50 metres from the beach, each with two or three bedrooms and a private seawater pool. Villa Mantalena, 3 km from Skyros Town, spreads across several buildings including a restored windmill and a traditional mansion. Holiday Home Lalares is a one-bedroom house in the Chora, 8 km from the port. The areas below set out where to base a self-catering stay.

In and around the Chora

The area in and around the Chora suits a self-catering base that keeps the town within reach. The Chora itself is car-free, so a house here means a walk uphill with your bags, but you stay steps from the shops, tavernas and museums. Just outside the town, holiday homes and small villas sit on the slopes with views over the east coast; one example, Villa Mantalena, spreads across several buildings including a restored windmill about 3 km from Skyros Town. It is the choice for travellers who want the town on their doorstep.

Magazia & Molos

Magazia and Molos hold most of the island's self-catering rooms, on and behind the long sandy beach 4 km north of the Chora. Studios and apartments here put you a short walk from the sand, the beach bars and the only bus link to the capital. This is the busiest and most convenient stretch for a beach holiday, and the beach is described in the Skyros beaches guide.

Gyrismata

Gyrismata, just north of Magazia and Molos, is the area for a villa with a private pool close to the sand. It sits about 2 km from the Chora and 50 metres from a sandy beach, with a handful of new-build villas among the local plants. It suits a family or a couple who want their own pool and garden while staying near the island's main beach.

Aspous

Aspous is a quieter self-catering base in a sandy bay on the north-east coast, about 5 km from the Chora. Its apartments and houses are scattered on the green hills above the beach, with a few tavernas, a mini market and a petrol station but little other development. It suits travellers who want calm and a short drive to the town.

Acherounes & Linaria

Acherounes, a 10-minute walk from the port of Linaria, is a sheltered west-coast bay that suits families, with studios and apartments in front of a shallow, wind-protected beach 8 to 10 km from the Chora. Linaria itself, the ferry port, offers self-catering rooms handy for the harbour tavernas and the boat. Both make a calmer, west-coast alternative to the beaches near the capital.

Choosing an area

Where to stay on Skyros depends on the kind of holiday you want. The Chora suits a base in the town, within walking distance of shops, tavernas and museums, though it is a hill climb and away from the sand. Magazia and Molos put you on the island's main beach with a bus to the Chora. Aspous and Kalamitsa are quieter beach bases, Acherounes is sheltered and good for families, and Linaria is handy for the ferry and the harbour tavernas. A car helps wherever you stay, since the best beaches lie far apart, as explained in the Skyros car rental guide.
