Kommos or Komos Beach near Matala, Crete

Kommos or Komos Beach is located 71km from southwest of Heraklion on the sea, just north of Matala and not far from the small village of Pitsidia (2 kilometer). When you drive out of Matala, you go round a curve and after the campgrounds on the hill and before the village of Pitsidia, there are left turns to the area of Kommos Beach. These are dirt tracks. You can walk to the beach in 15 minutes from here or you can drive down from the main road.
Kommos has a very big and beautiful sandy beach east of Matala.
The beach of Kommos is quite spectacular and surprisingly undeveloped, probably due to the archaeological site and restrictions on private enterprise in the area. It's much more quiet than the Matala beach, and there's room for nudists as well (the beach is large so keep walking and you will see where the nudist part of the beach starts). In the beginning of the beach you can rent umbrellas and sunbeds, and you can get a drink at the nearby tavernas. If you want to visit the naturist beach than it would be wise to bring your own water supply.
Kommos Beach is one of the places where the caretta-caretta turtle lays its eggs. Places where this has happened are marked so you cannot break the eggs. Not far from Kommos Beach there are some accommodations in the shape of hotels, apartments and studios. In nearby Pitsidia there is a camping. Visitors that stay in Matala often prefer to spend their time on the more quiet Kommos Beach.
This is the site of on-going archaeological excavations of a Minoan settlement on a very beautiful sandy beach east of Matala. Kommos was a Minoan harbour from the early time of Minoan civilization. It was probably the major port of entry in the Messara Plain, and monumental buildings near the shore and paved roads towards Messara suggest a customs house. Remains from the Greek era have also been found in Kommos. A temple built here in the tenth century B.C. is one of the oldest known in Greece. Remainders of later temples dating from the fourth to the first century B.C. are now visible.
