Chania Hotels: Where to Stay in Western Crete

The Chania region offers accommodation across western Crete, from small hotels in Chania old town to quiet studios near Kissamos and seaside apartments in the Apokoronas. This guide gathers places I have stayed in or visited in person, grouped by area. For self-catering houses with private pools, see the Chania villas guide.

Chania Town

Chania old town is the best base for first-time visitors, with Venetian and Ottoman lanes, the harbour and the market all on foot. Madonna Studios sits on a quiet street in the west of the old town, next to the Maritime Museum, with traditional wood-and-stone architecture and a garden. Free public parking is 80 m away, and the town beach is a 10-minute walk. Frida Apartments stands on a hill in the Chania suburbs, 1 km from the centre and 400 m from Nea Chora beach. It is family-run, with a swimming pool and pool bar and views over the sea and the town.

Kissamos & the west

Kissamos, in the far north-west, is the gateway to the Balos and Gramvousa boat trips and to Falassarna. Ariana's Place, the former Kastania Lodge, is a small complex of a villa, an apartment and a studio above Kastelli Kissamos. It has a quiet rural location, a pool and views over the bay of Kissamos and the sea. Nearby are quiet beaches such as Korfalonas and Livadia, gorges to walk, and Byzantine churches with frescoes.

Almyrida & the Apokoronas

The green Apokoronas, east of Chania, suits families and couples who want a quiet seaside base. The Niriides Hotel sits in Almyrida, 2 km from Kalives and 22 km from Chania, 150 m from two sandy beaches. It has 12 apartments in a garden with an outdoor pool, each with a kitchen and satellite TV, and the beaches are organised with umbrellas and a lifeguard. Isadora Apartments also stands in Almyrida, 50 m from the beach, with bright self-catering apartments, a garden, air conditioning and free parking, and views over Souda Cove.
