The Beaches of Sifnos
The best beaches of Sifnos run along the south of the island - Vathi in its own mini bay is the finest, Platis Gialos is the main beach, and the village of Faros has three small beaches of its own. Kamares, beside the ferry harbour on the west coast, and Heronissos, in the far north, complete the picture. Some beaches are reached by asphalt road, others over a track, and a few only by boat. Vathi and Vroulidia
Vathi is the finest beach on Sifnos, set in its own sheltered mini bay on the south coast, with a taverna on the sand. You reach it by bus over the new road or by kaiki from Kamares, and a path runs on to the coastal village of Platis Gialos. Vroulidia lies in the north of the island, not far from Heronissos, and is reached by a path down from the main road; a rough car track also leads there, but it is in poor condition.
The beaches of Faros
Faros is a cosy village on the south-east coast of Sifnos, reached over a good road, with a few tavernas and some accommodation. It has three beaches. Faros Beach itself has the tavernas and the harbour, where traditional wooden boats float; Glipho lies just next to it, reached by a path through the village, with trees for shade; and Fasoulou, on the other side of the village, is the quietest of the three, reached from a junction before you enter the village and looking out over the Chrissopigi Monastery. In mid-May the mini-market and tavernas were already open here, which makes Faros a good choice early in the season.
Platis Gialos
Platis Gialos is the largest beach on Sifnos, on the south coast, about a kilometre long but not very wide, in a bay that is largely protected from the wind. On a hill above the village stands the Panagia Vounou monastery, and near the beach is the "White Tower", one of 57 Hellenistic towers on Sifnos. The village opens for the season from June, so in May the tavernas and accommodation are still closed.
Heronissos
Heronissos sits in a beautiful bay in the far north of Sifnos, beside an idyllic little fishing village. The beach is sandy but not very big, with trees for shade, and coloured wooden boats fill the bay. It is very quiet early in the season - in May the tavernas and the mini-market were still closed.
Kamares
Kamares beach lies on the west coast of Sifnos, next to the harbour where all the ferries to the island arrive. It is an attractive, large and wide sandy beach where the sea slopes gently, which suits small children. Parts of the beach have sunbeds and umbrellas for rent, and tavernas, accommodation and shops are all nearby, with many trees around the sand for shade.
