Thassos Beaches: Golden Beach, Makriamos, Aliki & Paradise

Thassos has many long, sandy beaches, most with fine white sand and ringed by pine and olive trees, from organised beaches with sunbeds and umbrellas to quiet, deserted coves. The east coast holds the long, forested sands of Golden Beach and Makriamos, the south keeps Paradise Beach, Potos, Pefkari and Psili Amos, and the west and north-west coast add Skala Prinos, Skala Rachoni and Tripiti. Golden Beach (Chrissi Amoudia)

Golden Beach, or Chrissi Amoudia, is a long beach on the east coast 10 kilometres south of the capital, a little south of Makriamos and set between Skala Panagia and Skala Potamia. The sand is backed by dense forest, with Mount Ypsario rising behind, and the beach is shallow, which makes it safe for children. Sunbeds and umbrellas are for hire, and the resorts of Skala Panagia and Skala Potamia sit at either end.

Makriamos Beach

Makriamos, whose name means long sand, is a long sandy beach just 2 kilometres from the capital in the north-east of the island. It is surrounded by lush forest, runs for kilometres and rates as the best beach in the area. Sunbeds and umbrellas are for hire and water sports are on offer.

Paradise Beach

Paradise Beach lies 17 kilometres from Thassos Town, close to the village of Potos, and is widely considered the most beautiful beach on the island. It resembles a tropical beach, with fine white sand and brightly coloured water, and it is shallow and safe for children. The beach is popular with windsurfers and is reached by a narrow path through a small wood from the nearby village of Kinira. At the far end, near the rocks, is a space for naturists.

Aliki Beach

Aliki Beach sits in the south-east of the island, in front of a picturesque village of the same name. It consists of two small white-sand beaches in a pretty bay, surrounded by olive and pine trees, and it has grown steadily more popular with visitors. Aliki also keeps ancient sites and saltpans, so the beach pairs a swim with a look at the marble quarries and ruins described in the Thassos sights guide.

The southern beaches

The south of Thassos, around Potos, Pefkari, Astris and Limenaria, holds the busiest run of resort beaches.

Potos & Kamari

Potos Beach is 2 kilometres long, 34 kilometres from the capital in the south of the island, and a popular resort with restaurants, tavernas, bars and hotels, sunbeds, umbrellas and water sports. Kamari Beach is a short walk from Potos Beach and also has sunbeds and umbrellas for hire.

Pefkari

Pefkari Beach lies between Limenaria and Potos, 35 kilometres from the capital, and consists of two beautiful and popular sandy beaches ringed by pine trees. It has full facilities: sunbeds, umbrellas, water sports, tavernas, restaurants and bars.

Psili Amos, Astris & Rossogremos

Psili Amos, whose name means fine sand, sits in the south 31 kilometres from Thassos Town, near the village of Astris and 5 kilometres from Potos, with sunbeds, umbrellas, water sports and small tavernas. Astris Beach, near Potos, is sandy but steep with high waves and strong currents, so it is not suitable for children. Rossogremos Beach, 2 kilometres from Potos, is a quiet, relatively unknown stretch of white sand backed by trees for shade.

Limenaria, Tripiti & Metalia

Limenaria, the main resort of Thassos, has a large sandy beach 12 kilometres from the capital in the south-west. Tripiti Beach, on the south-west coast near Limenaria, 39 kilometres from the capital, is a large, popular beach of sand and pebbles with sunbeds, umbrellas and water sports. Metalia Beach, a fine sandy beach near Limenaria, is shallow and safe for children, and from it you can see the holes left by the old mining industry.

The north-west beaches

The north-west coast around Skala Prinos keeps quieter, forest-backed beaches close to the ferry port.

Skala Prinos & Skala Rachoni

Skala Prinos Beach lies 12 kilometres from the capital on the west side of the island, a sandy beach with trees for shade, tavernas, sunbeds, umbrellas and a few hotels; Skala Prinos is also a small ferry port connected to the mainland. Skala Rachoni Beach, 11 kilometres from Limenas on the north-west coast just above Skala Prinos, is a long, beautiful sandy beach surrounded by forest, in front of the village of Skala Rachoni.

Nisteri, Papalimani & Skala Kalirachi

Nisteri Beach, 1 kilometre from the capital, is a sandy beach surrounded by forested mountains, organised with sunbeds, umbrellas, tavernas and rooms. Papalimani Beach sits near Thassos Town between Skala Rachoni and Glyfada, a popular but small beach that quietens in the late afternoon. Skala Kalirachi Beach, 18 kilometres from Thassos Town below the old hill village of Kalirachi, is long and narrow, with rooms for rent and tavernas but little tourist development.

Livadi

Livadi Beach lies in the east of the island 20 kilometres from the capital, close to the village of Aliki. It is a quiet beach of sand and small pebbles, popular with backpackers and campers.

Naturism on Thassos

The only beach with an official space for naturists is Paradise Beach in the east of the island, at the far end near the rocks. Thassos is not a naturists' island like Mykonos, Antiparos or Crete, but there are quieter options in the small coves near Aliki, Tripiti, Potos and Limenaria, and on the very long beaches wherever a stretch is empty.
