Kassandra Restaurants: Where to Eat by Harbour, Beach & Village

Kassandra serves its best food at the fishing harbours and along the beaches, so eating on the peninsula is easiest to choose by area rather than by a single restaurant. The harbours of Nea Fokea, Siviri, Skala Fourkas, Possidi and Nea Moudania grill the day's catch, the beach tavernas of Kallithea, Polychrono, Chaniotis and Pefkochori feed the resorts, and the square at Afitos lines up bars and restaurants above the bay. This guide sets out where to eat by area, since the villages hold too many small family tavernas to name.

Fish tavernas at the harbours

The fishing harbours of Kassandra grill the freshest fish on the peninsula. Nea Fokea keeps good fish tavernas and cafes around its harbour of colourful boats, and Siviri and Skala Fourkas serve the day's catch at fish tavernas by their small fishing ports on the west coast. Possidi cooks at tavernas and beach bars on its sandy spit, and Nea Moudania, one of the major fishing ports of Greece, lands the catch straight onto the tavernas along its promenade.

The square at Afitos

Afitos gathers its bars and restaurants around the church square on the 75-metre cliff called the balcony of Kassandra. The square looks out over the bay, so tables here trade sea food for the view, among the natural-stone houses and narrow streets of the old village. Shops and a couple of supermarkets stand nearby, and the beach tavernas of Aristoteles beach lie about 500 metres below.

Beach tavernas in the resorts

The beach resorts of Kassandra line their sands with tavernas, cafes and beach bars. Kallithea, Polychrono, Chaniotis and Pefkochori run the busiest strips, from simple grills to more luxurious restaurants, and many beach bars give free use of the sunbeds with a drink or a meal. Pefkochori keeps the widest choice in its new part, from bakeries and souvenir stalls to jewellers and restaurants, while the old part holds quieter traditional tavernas.

Local produce and the Nea Moudania market

Nea Moudania holds the largest market in Halkidiki every Wednesday morning, near the bus station on the western approach. The market sells local products, fruit and vegetables, meat, cheese, wine and honey, a good stop for self-catering stays on Kassandra. The villages of the peninsula produce olive oil, honey and wine, and Loutra and Agias Paraskevi in the south-west live from their olive groves and beekeeping, so simple traditional meals in the hill villages lean on local produce.

Late dinners, bars and nightlife

Kassandra keeps most of its nightlife on the north-east coast, above all in Kallithea. Kallithea runs several clubs where international DJs play through the summer, so those who want a late night head there, and Pefkochori keeps a disco in the north of the village along with its bars. Polychrono and Chaniotis stay quieter, more about late dinners and drinks at the beach cafes, and the harbour villages wind down early over fish and ouzo.

Choosing where to eat

Where to eat on Kassandra depends on the kind of evening you want. For the freshest fish, choose the harbours of Nea Fokea, Siviri, Skala Fourkas, Possidi and Nea Moudania, where the boats land the catch beside the tables. For a beach dinner in the busy resorts, Kallithea, Polychrono, Chaniotis and Pefkochori line their sands with tavernas and bars, and for a view with the meal, the square at Afitos sits high above the bay. The villages behind these tables, and their beaches and hotels, are set out in the Kassandra peninsula guide.
