Accommodation on Sikinos is limited and concentrated at the port of Alopronia, by the island's only organised beach, and runs to a small seaside hotel, a traditional guesthouse and a set of self-catering studios. Porto Sikinos sits right by the sea over six levels, the Kamares stands a little back from the beach with breakfast and port transfers, and Maistrali Studios offers self-catering by the harbour. Porto Sikinos, Alopronia
Porto Sikinos is a seaside hotel at Alopronia, built on the slope of the hill and divided over six levels, 30 metres from the beach and 100 metres from the port. Built in the traditional architecture of the Cyclades, it has 18 white rooms with pink and blue windows, each with air conditioning, a refrigerator, satellite TV, music, a bathroom and a terrace. Its position by the water makes it the choice for a comfortable, peaceful base within a few steps of the sand and the harbour.
Hotel Kamares, Alopronia
The traditionally built Kamares stands 400 metres from the beach of Alopronia, with Cycladic-style rooms that have a balcony or patio overlooking the Aegean Sea. The air-conditioned rooms, in blue tones with antique lamps, include a TV and fridge, and each has a private bathroom with shower and hairdryer. A buffet breakfast of local produce is served in the old-style dining area or on the garden terrace, traditional taverns are a five-minute walk away, free Wi-Fi covers the public areas, and a free two-way port transfer is provided. Sikinos Town, with its whitewashed houses and colourful doors, is 5 kilometres away.
Maistrali Studios & self-catering
For a self-catering base, Maistrali Studios sit at Alopronia, the harbour of the island, built in the embrace of the rocks a short distance from the beach. The newly built house, completed at the end of 2008, is decorated in modern style within the traditional Cycladic architecture, white with light-blue windows, and its position gives a panoramic view of the island: half the rooms look over the harbour of Alopronia and the Aegean, the rest have a veranda facing the island’s interior. Sikinos has no large villa estates, so a set of studios like this is the self-catering option on the island.
Choosing a base
Where to stay on Sikinos comes down to Alopronia, since almost all the rooms are there. Choose Porto Sikinos to be right by the sea, a few steps from the beach and the port; the Kamares for a traditional guesthouse with breakfast, free Wi-Fi and a free port transfer a little back from the sand; or Maistrali Studios to self-cater by the harbour with a view over the bay or the hills. All three sit by the island's only organised beach, with the bus to Kastro and Chora and the caiques to the south-coast beaches leaving from the same harbour.
