The village of Anatoli on the island of Crete

Anatoli is a small and old village in the southwest of the island of Crete, about 15 kilometers northwest of the town of Ierapetra. The name means "village of the rising sun". Here you will find the junction to Kalogeri and the coastal town of Gra Lia (a kind of suburb of Ierapetra with all facilities) or to the Monastery of Exakoustis. If you drive down you have beautiful views over the coast and the Lake of Techniti Bramiana that lies north of Ierapetra. The ride down the mountain takes about 20 minutes.
The village dates from the Venetian period and started life in the 16th century. It contains many dilapidated houses, but slowly more of them are restored.

There are three churches, a Venetian tower (in the north of the village) and two small tavernas that are open in the summer months. The most remarkable church is the Byzantine Kato Panagia and Agios Nikolaos Church which includes murals and an ancient tomb (this church is unfortunately not on the photos, it is slightly lower in the village). The large yellow painted church is the All Saints church or Agioi Pantes church and it dates back to 1873. It houses icons from the 15th to the 20th century that come from other churches in the area. Two particular interesting icons date from around 1400. In the village several old houses have been restored which are now offered as a holiday home. The village of Anatoli was a centre of resistance against the Turks during the Turkish occupation of the island of Crete. The monument of a resistance fighter you see on the square bears witness to this.
