The village of Melidoni on Crete
Melidoni is an extremely charming Cretan mountain village in the Apokoronas area southeast of the city of Chania. It can be reached via the route Neo Chorio - Pemonia - Melidoni. At the entrance of the village is a large war memorial with a plaque with names and a statue of a partisan (member of the Greek resistance, the date tells that it is from the time of the Turkish occupation - unfortunately I don't have the answer to who he is). It turns out to be a traditional village with narrow streets and old houses. The large prominent church of the village with its dome and two towers is really beautiful. It looks like it has been made of some kind of sandstone. From the square that runs around the church you've got a wonderful view over the Apokoronas and Souda Bay.
Some of the sheep in the village Melidoni are running loose, other sheep are sitting behind a fence. Bunches of grapes hang around the houses. It is very quiet in the village. In the kafenion with plastic and wooden chairs the male villagers talk to eachother and they wonder why the tourists are interested in their village. The tavern of the town seems to be a true work of art: with small pebbles someone made something very strange with all sorts of bows and decorations. Some pebbles he colored so that a kind of painting was made. Around Melidoni it is very green. On a small road on the left after you have driven into the village there is a nice small church next to a cemetery.
