The village of Kournas is situated at an altitude of 160 meters at about a 4 kilometers distance from Lake Kournas and 8 kilometers away from the coastal town of Georgioupolis. The road to the village is narrow and winding, and the ride takes about fifteen minutes. In contrast to Lake Kournas the village with the same name is totally lacking in tourism. Kournas is a pretty big village with a large church and narrow streets. The village has about 500 inhabitants. There are some shops and the locals (men) are on the road sitting at the kafenion to see if there is anything going to happen that day. In the village you can find the Byzantine church of Agios Georgios in which are 13th-century frescoes.
