THE BEACH OF MARATHI ON THE ISLAND OF CRETE

The beach of Marathi is a small sandy beach in the south east of the Akrotiri peninsula in Crete.
They are actually two beaches because a pier divides the beach into two. A little bit further down the road there is another small triangular beach.
Marathi beach can be reached via the route Souda - Aroni - Sternes - Marathi and the distance from the city of Chania is about 18 km. The airport is 7 km away. The last kilometers to Marathi Beach go down over a winding road to the bay where Marathi is situated. Marathi is also a popular short trip for people that live or that are staying in Chania as a tourist. From the port of Chania there are several boat trips to the beach, including one with a glass bottom boat. There is a small harbour near the village for the fishing- and excursion boats (the pier that divides the beach into two). Because of this it can suddenly get very busy on the beach and in the taverns.
Marathi beach is out of the winds and currents and the sea is protected bay its shallow bay. There are hardly any waves. Therefore it is very suitable for families with small children. Marathi is especially popular with the inhabitants of Chania, because the seafood in the taverns is very good here. Near Marathi is another small sandy beach with a tavern. This beach is called Loutraki and it is located just south of Marathi Beach.
If you follow the road heading north from the beach you'll almost immediately come along the remains of the Roman city of Minoa. This place was in all probability the port of Aptera. There are remnants of normal houses and of military buildings, and Roman Baths. At the waterfront there is a wall shaped in a semicircle that is still washed by the sea.
This is a large and busy taverna (especially if just a one or two excursion boats from Chania sailed in) which is perhaps a little understaffed for the moments of peak periods. Patience can be a good thing. There is no cappuccino on the menu, but only nescafe ... Many starters, not only fish, but also meatballs, chicken, spaghetti and more. We both ordered penne with salmon. The pasta was al dente and there was lots of salmon and some fresh dill in it: very good.
Our verdict: it could have been a 9, but because of the long waiting time and the fact that there was no cappuccino, we give it 8,5 out of 10
