The village of Modi on Crete
The village of Modi is situated in northern Crete, just west of the tourist resort of Platanias, with the village of Gerani nearby. The distance to Chania is 15 kilometer. Modi is located in the green nature at a bit of the old national road. The whole area here is very fertile. Most people in the village live of agriculture. There are many olive trees and vegetables that are being grown, but there is also much "wild" nature with pine trees, plane trees, cypresses and eucalyptus trees. Fields of orange trees and vines alternate with unspoiled nature and there are many other plants, flowers and shrubs.
In 1953 objects were excavated in the village that are now on display in the Archaeological Museum of Chania. Amongst other things coins were found with on one side the image of the god Zeus and on the other side the word "modaion", which meant that the coins were of the people of Modi. Many objects from the period 600-100 BC were excavated in Modi. Therefore it is thought that here at that time there was a city. Other finds like weapons and tombs that were found in Modi support this theory. But whoever thinks that a lot of sites can be viewed in the village will be disappointed: everything there is to see is a sign that says that the objects that were found in Modi are now in the museum of Chania.
