The Gerani Cave is located six kilometers west of Rethymno and is accessible through an exit from the highway (the New National Road). It lies down at the sea (or so we thought, but I understand that it lies 300 meters from the shore), where there is also a nice little beach. Unfortunately we did not have a look t the cave by the sea, because we had no idea what it was. However, we saw people climb up. We basically had the idea that it wouldn't be much to look at. In the 50 meters long cave with stalagmites there are six halls.

In the cave three skeletons of people from the Neolithic period were found and objects of stone and bone. The skeletons are probably from people that were trapped after an earthquake, because the entrance was blocked by a large rock. Only in 1969 when they were busy with the construction of a bridge they stumbled upon this cave. Also the remains of more than 100 native deer were found, that died at the end of the Pleistocene. In the Minoan period it also seems to have been an important place. The things that were found here are on display at the Archaeological Museum of Rethymnon.
