map of Crete About 12 km west of Heraklion on the main road to Agia Pelagia and Rethimnon lies at the seashore the little village of Pantanasa or Pantanassa. Both the village and the beach are named after the monastery of Pantanassa which is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and set along the highway. The monastery was built around 1950 and is now a nunnery. There is a rather big harbour loaded with fishermans boats and small private boats. From here you look over the electricity central at Gazi and the harbour with the cargo ships. In the distance you have a total view over Heraklion.

On the other side of the harbour you find a pretty, "unknown" and quiet beach which is almost only visited by the people of Crete and not by the tourists. The beach lies hidden from the road and probably most people don't even know it is there. Pantanassa beach is surrounded by some shrubs abd a couple of pine trees and during high season there are (I am told) also umbrellas and sunbeds for rent. In the harbour of Pantanassa next to the beach there are a couple of taverns where you can have something to eat or drink.
