The village and the beach of Kastri in the south of Crete
The village and the beach of Kastri are situated in the south of Crete on the route Tsoutsouros - Keratokampos. The distance to Keratokampos is about 1,5 to 2 kilometers. Kastri can be reached via the route Heraklion - Arkalochori - Anno Viannos - Kastri (from Ano Viannos you take the exit to Keratokampos). The distance to Heraklion is around 70 kilometers. There is a village beach and just outside of the village heading west it is endless sand (Listis beach, Kamboula beach) with every here and there beautiful rocks in the water or on the beach itself. Listis beach is a very quiet spot. Because it is so large and so quiet the beach outside of the village is sometimes also used as a naturist beach.
The village of Kastri itself is small and yet there are a few hotels (family hotel size - only small ones) and pensions, and there are some apartments for rent. At the seafront there are a few taverns. There are tamarisk trees on the village beach for shade but there are no sunbeds and umbrellas for rent. At first glance a lovely village with a very beautiful beach / naturist beach.

Listis Beach is just outside the village of Kastri towards Tsoutsouras. It is indicated by a sign. To get there you are faced with a steep climb down. Another possibility is to go to the next beach, which is called Kamboula, and then walk to the east. Listis beach is a sandy beach with some pebbles and with clear water. The seabed is also sandy. There are no facilities at Listis beach. What makes the beach so special is the beautiful rocks on the beach itself and in the sea. If you swim around the rock to the east you will end up at another small beach. The name Listis comes from a rocky area on the east side where there are several caves: according to the local residents a bandit (Listis) lived in one of the caves. The caves are easily accessible from the main road.

This tavern is located on the road that runs along the beach of Kastri. It was a taverna where we were not expecting much and we just wanted a to eat a quick little lunch. We ordered a maxi omelette, a Greek salad and tzatziki. The food was really delicious. There were fresh herbs in the Greek salad, the tzatziki had quite some garlic in it and tasted good and the maxi omelette was absolutely huge, with crispy fries and with a delicious taste. Recommended in our opinion.
Our verdict: a 9 out of 10
