The village of Limnes on Crete
The village of Limnes lies along the Old National Road from Agios Nikolaos to Heraklion. The distance from Agios Nikolaos is approximately 10 kilometer. The village already attracts your attention when you drive on the "real highway" (the New National Road) because you can see the lovely church towers above the village reaching for the sky. If you come from the direction of Agios Nikolaos is driving you will see the first church just before you enter the village. Shortly after that you can take the exit to the left or to right and go into the village. The left turn goes to Heraklion but takes you largely through the newer part of the village, with shops, a memorial and a few taverns.
If you want to really take a look at the village and the churches you have to take the turn on the right. The old Limnes has nice narrow streets where the grapes grow on the houses and the old ladies sit outside to do needle work. In this old piece of village are three beautiful churches you can go and see (from the outside). Most houses are dilapidated and some have rusty doors or walls where the stones have fallen out. Other houses look well taken care of and they have pots of flowers in front of them. There is almost no traffic here because the streets are too narrow for that. It seems as if time has stood still here. Limnes lies in a fertile region and is surrounded by woods and olive groves.
