The archaeological site of Petras is located on the coast just east of Sitia town (about 2 kilometers). There are remains of a Minoan city and a palace here. In 1985 excavations in Petras began. There are remains of walls built with large bricks, three square towers, a palace, houses and storage rooms. In 1450 BC the palace was destroyed, probably by an earthquake. One of the rooms has contained an intact Minoan archive. The entrance of the site is via a small Venetian tower. When we got there the site was closed and I got the impression that Petras is currently no longer accessible.
