The village of Miamou near Lendas on Crete

Miamou is an old mountain village just above Lendas in the south of the Iraklio province, 60 kilometers south of Heraklion. It is the second last village you will encounter on the route from Agii Deka to Lendas, which is situated at the coast. The last village is Krotos. The distance to the coast is 4 kilometers. About 100 people live inside the village of Miamou. Not much concrete here, but very authentic and quiet with traditional stone houses that are painted white and a church with two aisles and a bell tower.
As you see more often in Greek mountain villages where people go away, it is a combination of white painted inhabited houses and gray-brown dilapidated buildings that are no longer inhabited.
The village is also along a hiking trail that starts at a viewpoint overlooking the Messara plain.
It is said that the name Miamou comes from "Mia" meaning "One" and "Omou" meaning "Group" and it is named after a small group of people that settled here in this village in the Middle Ages as only survivors after an epidemic. In 1583 the village had 204 inhabitants. Miamou has been inhabited since the Neolithic period (roughly about 10,000 BC).
