map of Crete Exo Mouliana is a very sleepy and old village in the mountains on the road from Agios Nikolaos to Sitia. It lies as an altitude of 583 meter and has a little over 500 inhabitants. It hasn't got any major attractions (as far as I could see at first glance) besides its sleepiness, a beautiful church and a nice square with a taverna and a non working fountain with public benches around it. A lot of the houses appear to be deserted, and look like they are going to fall apart. Appreciate it for a quiet break. Most inhabitants live from the production of olive oil, raisins and vegetables. Those who look further into the village, will find the old church of Agios Georgios, another small old church (the Agios Nikitas dating from 1770) and several other churches. Before it was named Exo Mouliana the village was simply called Agios Georgios after this church. In this church wall paintings can be seen. Nearby Exo Mouliana also two old "Tholos" tombs have been found (in the shape of a beehive) that date from the late Minoan period. In these graves several things were found like a golden mask, a bronze sword and pottery.

In Exo Mouliana there is an exit that leads you over a dirt road (5 kilometer) to the small village of Kalavros and the bay Tigania, where you can find several small, remote and deserted pebble beaches found where you can swim in peace. These beaches are surrounded by the high and steep rising mountains behind them. The sea is quite deep here but it is a good place to snorkel. Near Exo Mouliana is also the gorge and the waterfall of Richtis, which ends on the beach of Richtis (there is a sign on the road).
