The village of Aspro on the island of Crete
The village of Aspro is a small village on a hill in the Apokoronas just above the tourist resort of Almirida. It is set back from the road and very quiet (no passing traffic). It overlooks the Bay of Souda towards Almirida. There are not many people living there and it is like time stood still. Some of the old houses have been renovated, while others are still in ruin. Aspro is also the home of a handful of holiday villas (the one below on this page "Sophia's House" is one of my most favourite accommodations of all, and it is quite cheap compared to other villa's, definitely recommendable, but be quick because it tends to be fully booked quickly) and a small church.
You can walk through its cobbled streets and find interesting details and arches on the old stone build houses or just admire the bougainville trees and the views over the Bay of Souda all the way to the village of Almirida and beyond.
Every now and then your peace and quiet will be "disturbed" by a small pussy cat asking for your attention.
Aspro feels a bit like one of the last forgotten villages in the Apokoronas. In recent years some of the old stone houses that have fallen apart (mostly from the Turkish time) have been bought and refurbished. There are also a number of holiday homes built and they are busy building a couple more. From Aspro there are hiking trails through the valley past fields of olive trees that lead you further inland. You will see isolated houses (often new) that are purchased by people who apparently need the rest. In the village of Aspro itself there are also a number of houses for sale. It is a place for people who love the silence and not a place for people who want to go out and party. If you want this than you go to nearby Almyrida, where there are plenty of good restaurants and bars, shops, supermarkets and other tourist facilities available.
This lovely intimate villa is situated on a hill near the seaside resort of Almirida. We stayed here in September 2008 and we absolutely loved it. It was cosy and comfortable and the views from the terraces and the pool were fantastic.
The villa had everything you could wish for: amazing views from the terraces and the pool, a beautiful bathroom, a living space with comfortable couches, a dining table and chairs and three bedrooms with extra large extra comfortable beds with loads of pillows. The beds were over two meters long because I could fit in without any problems and without my feet sticking out (yes people, I am a tall, tall guy).
I loved this place because it felt so homely and everybody was feeling so happy in it. It makes you want to buy your own villa on the island.
