If you are in the village of Goudouras in the southeast of Crete, and you drive in the direction of Agia Triada and Ziros, you will come to a junction after a few miles where the signs tell you that to the right you go to Agia Triada and to the left you go to the church of Agios Nikolaos and the village Platani. In fact both the roads lead to Agia Triada, but the other route (left) is a little longer and perhaps more beautiful.
You drive through the small abandoned village of Platani, where a number of the stone houses are so old that I think that they date back to the Venetian time. Also in the village is the well maintained small chapel of Agios Nikolaos. Eactly how old it is, is unlear to me, but since it was indicated by a brown sign (used to point to antiques), it could be Venetian or even Byzantine. Unfortunately there are no frescoes in the church, but it is open, so you can take a look inside.
