The village of Zakros in the southeast of Crete

At the top of the village lies the source of Zakros, that delivers about 800 cubic meters of water per hour and supplies the large quantities of olive trees in the area with water. The area of Zakros was important in the Minoan period. Just outside the village on the road to Kato Zakros you will immediately see the remains of a Minoan villa, but much is still hidden underground. Between Kato Zakros and the higher situated village of Zakros is the Valley of the Dead, where the Minoans used to bury their dead in the caves that you can see in the cliffs. You can walk through this valley. It leads along a river bed and the length is about 6 kilometers. The walk takes about 2 to 3 hours depending on how fast you walk. There are no tavernas along the way so you must bring your own water supply. I was told a story that in Zakros people were digging in their garden and found Minoan graves. They quickly covered it again, because finds like this mean that you lose your home and the place is marked an archaeological site. Who knows what else will be found in this area in the coming years.

Other attractions in the village of Zakros are the restored windmills and the Afentis Christos church. They are indicated by a sign. You have to walk up into the village and than first you come along the restored windmills. Most doors are open and you can look inside. There is also a museum of the mills. If you walk all the way up and then turn left and you come to the end of the road on the outskirts of the village you will see the Afentis Christos Church and the sources. There is also an old cheese factory (a bit further). The Afentis Christos church is one of the oldest churches in the area and dates from the Byzantine period. Inside the church are small fragments of frescoes have survived and outside in an alcove you can still see a complete fresco in which Christ is depicted. Around the church are some remains of an older church, such as a large pillar. Next to the church you will find the sources, some very old houses, an old mill and a picnic area.
