The village of Eleftherna on the island of Crete
The village of Eleftherna is in the north of Crete, about 25 kilometers southeast of the town of Rethimnon. Around the village are a few attractions such as a tiny Byzantine church, just before the entrance of the village on the right hand side of the road (with a fence around it, so you can not see the inside). After you have left the village on your way to Ancient Eleftherna you will pass by a tomb (?) On the right hand side of the road a nice church that is partly built in a rock (the Agios Antonios).
After a short drive through the village you'll reach a junction where a sign tells you what the attractions can be found in the area. Do not be distracted and do not take the road on your left going down, but follow the main road (right). The real attractions are located a few miles away in the village of Ancient Eleftherna, where you can see remains of a Roman tower and cisterns and a Hellenistic city. Also here is the magnificent 10th century Byzantine church Sotiras Christos.
This tavern is situated in the street where you drive through when you're on your way to the ruins of Ancient Eleftherna. The menu is simple and not very extensive, but the bread is fresh and the food is not bad.
Ons oordeel: redelijk, een 7 uit 10
