The village of Chamaitoulo or Chametoulo on the island of Crete




Chametoulo or Chamaitoulo is a small traditional village which is located about 20 kilometers distance from the larger village of Ziros. You drive past the village if you take the road from Ziros to the beaches of Xerokampos. There are about 50 houses in the village, of which quite a few are dilapidated. The village is virtually deserted. The few inhabitants of the village live mainly from livestock (breeding sheep and goats). on the top left of the village stands the church of Agios Georgios. Atop a rock 2 kilometers south of Chametoulo the remains of a settlement from the Neolithic period have been found. On the cliffs around it there are remnants of buildings and ancient potsherds.
